Talk to a Black therapist who already gets it.

At True Life Change you can ask to be matched with a Black therapist. Talk through stress, family, work, faith, grief, or identity with someone who shares the context, so your session is about you, not about catching your therapist up.

Why it matters who's in the room

Some things you shouldn't have to explain first.

Therapy works best when you feel understood quickly. With a therapist who shares your cultural context, less of the hour goes to translating your life and more of it goes to working on what you came in for.

  1. 01

    Code-switching all day

Being "on" at work, at school, at the doctor's office. Therapy can be the one hour a week where you don't have to adjust how you talk or who you are.

  2. 02

    Race-based stress

Microaggressions, being the only one in the room, and the news cycle that follows you home. You can name it without having to prove it happened.

  3. 03

    Family and generational expectations

"We don't talk about that." Being the one everyone leans on. Wanting more for yourself without feeling ungrateful for what came before.

  4. 04

    Being strong all the time

The pressure to hold everything together and never show it. Asking for support is not weakness, and you don't have to earn rest.

  5. 05

    Faith in the conversation

If faith matters to you, it belongs in the room. A good therapist works with it, not around it.

  6. 06

First in the family to try therapy

If therapy wasn't something people around you did, starting can feel like a big step. We keep it simple: one free call, no pressure, and you set the pace.

Get Matched
Can I ask to be matched with a Black therapist?
Yes. Mention it in the form or when you call, and we'll match you with a Black therapist on our team. If there's a wait for a specific clinician, we'll tell you up front so you can decide what works for you.
Will race come up in every session?
Only if you want it to. Culture is part of the context, not the whole agenda. Many clients come in for anxiety, a breakup, burnout, or parenting stress and simply want a therapist they don't have to explain the background to.
Do you take my insurance?
We work with most major plans in Maryland, including CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Optum, Johns Hopkins, Wellpoint / Amerigroup, and Maryland Medicaid. We verify your benefits before your first session.
What does it cost without insurance?
Individual sessions are $100 and couples sessions are $120. A sliding scale is available for those who qualify, so ask during your free consult.
I've never been to therapy, and my family doesn't really believe in it.
That's more common than you might think. Your first session is a conversation, not a test. You decide what to share and how fast to go, and what you say stays confidential.
Is online therapy as good as in person?
For many people, yes. Lots of clients find it easier to open up from their own space, and there's no commute to fit around work or kids. All sessions run on a secure, HIPAA-compliant platform.
Do you see teens, couples, and families?
Yes. We work with children from age 6, preteens, teens, adults, couples, and families.
In crisis or thinking about suicide? Call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline any time, or call 911 for an emergency.
